Hospitality job gains keep Mass. unemployment at 3.1%

The Massachusetts unemployment rate in January remained at 3.1 percent for the fourth straight month thanks to job gains across most industries, including hospitality, transportation, science and finance.
In total, Massachusetts added about 11,400 jobs in January, keeping the unemployment rate 0.9 percentage points lower than the national average.
The information industry lost 800 jobs (0.9 percent) over the month and manufacturing remained the same, but every other industry recorded a job gain.
Leisure and hospitality added 4,000 jobs for a 1.1-percent increase; trade, transportation and utilities added 2,500 jobs for a 0.4-percent increase; professional scientific and business services added 1,800 jobs for a 0.3-percent increase; financial activities added 1,100 jobs for a 0.5-percent increase and construction saw a 800-job gain for a 0.5-percent increase.
The public sector saw a 200-job gain in the month.
The job figures, released Monday by the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, come after the state grew its labor force by more than 109,000 last year and had the highest employment to population gain of any state.
In January, the state had 27,200 more jobs than it had in January 2018.
