Hopkinton Square Takes Step Forward

With the opening of a 40,000-square-foot Price Chopper this month, a commercial and retail development in Hopkinton originally approved not long before the 2008 recession took another step toward fruition.

Hopkinton Square, located just off Interstate 495 on West Main Street, was approved in 2007 to contain four buildings and 100,000 square feet of leasable retail, restaurant and commercial space.

But meeting minutes show that Joseph returned to the Planning Board in 2010 with an amended plan for a smaller development – 70,000 square feet and two buildings.

Price Chopper opened in the 40,000-square-foot building on June 21. The store held a pre-opening party the night before that raised $3,000 for Hopkinton Youth Soccer, the Baypath Humane Society and Project Just Because.

Joseph did not return a message seeking comment Monday, but he told the MetroWest Daily News in May that the remaining 30,000-square-foot building will open later this year and tenants secured so far include Zio's Quattro and Bison Burger restaurants, Webster First Federal Credit Union, a dentist's office and a nail salon.

Green Measures

Price Chopper said in an announcement that the Hopkinton Square store was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Features include a heat-reflecting "cool roof," water-efficiency plumbing and energy-efficient lighting, and LED-lit freezers and cases. The store will also purchase renewable energy credits through a Price Chopper program.

"We focused our sustainable efforts to make the shopping experience as pleasurable as possible, while reducing our utility consumption and thereby better controlling costs at the consumer level," Jerry Golub, Price Chopper's executive board chairman, said in a statement.

The Schenectady-N.Y. based supermarket chain's latest store in MetroWest adds to two other locations in Marlborough and Shrewsbury. The latter, a 64,000-foot store, opened in late 2010 and also meets LEED standards.
