The Town of Hopkinton has signed a 99-year lease with the nonprofit 26.2 Foundation for a 19-acre site on East Main Street, where the organization plans to build an International Marathon Center less than a mile from the Boston Marathon starting line.
The project has been in the works for over a decade and is expected to open in spring 2024, according to a press release from the town. Once completed, it will include educational and cultural facilities, a marathon museum and hall of honor. It will also feature conference facilities, an auditorium, research space, classrooms and function rooms.
The museum will cost $20-$25 million, depending on the final design, said Timothy Kilduff, president of the 26.2 Foundation, which is based in Hopkinton.
HealyKohler Design of Washington, D.C. is developing an interactive visitor experience, working with plans developed by Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects of Hopkinton, according to a press release.
“The IMC will be a signature destination for runners the world over – a truly international venue designed to draw both U.S. and overseas visitors, like the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York,” said Hopkinton Town Manager Norman Khumalo, in a statement. “It will be of significant importance to the economic growth and development not only of Hopkinton, but also to the entire MetroWest region.”
The project is expected to have more than $40 million invested into Hopkinton’s infrastructure in the next several years. More than $20 million of that will come from the IMC development, with additional funding coming through the town’s ongoing Main Street Corridor Project.
