Hopkinton, Fitchburg Get $1.6M For Development

Hopkinton and Fitchburg are among four Massachusetts communities that will receive a total of $3.56 million in state grants for public infrastructure projects.

Gov. Deval Patrick's office said the Community Development Action Grants will create more than 490 new local jobs and 160 units of affordable housing.

In Hopkinton, a $1 million grant will pay for a new sewer line and connections along Elm Street to support residential and business growth, including the expansion of Lonza Biologics Inc. The governor's office said the project will attract $110 million in private investment, a 12-unit affordable rental housing project and 278 new jobs over the next two years.

In Fitchburg, $566,000 will go to the creation of a truck entrance and loading docks at the publicly owned Putnam Place complex. That will provide access to the property for trucks that are 70 feet or longer. The project is expected to attract $12.4 million in private investment, create 23 affordable housing units, and generate 16 jobs and retain 85 more, according to the governor's office.

Lawrence and Lowell will also each receive $1 million.

The CDAG program was created as part of the Patrick Administration's 2008 Housing Bond Bill. It provides funding for projects to improve a city or town's overall economic condition.
