Hopkinton architectural firm co-founder to retire

Michael Gorman, who founded the Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects firm in Hopkinton 42 years ago and now serves as its president, will retire in October, the firm announced Thursday.

Gorman's role as president will be passed to another co-founder, Scott Richardson, who is now a vice president. The other co-founder is Steve Lewis, who is the design principal.

Among Gorman's most notable projects at GRLA has been working with EMC on 4 million square feet of office space for the technology company. In all, he led more than 200 projects with EMC in his career including its Hopkinton corporate headquarters, the firm said.

Gorman served on the board of trustees at the EcoTarium in Worcester and was the president at WICN Public Radio in Worcester.

GRLA has also worked in recent years with tech companies including Boston Scientific, Cognex, HeartWare and Kronos. In Central Massachusetts, it has designed the Mondor-Eagen Library and Information Commons at Anna Maria College in Paxton, the Bay State Commons shopping center in Westborough, and Quinsigamond Community College's Center for Health and Workforce Development in downtown Worcester.

Gorman said he doesn't anticipate being bored in retirement, with plans to spend more time on passions including gardening, carpentry, travel, consulting and learning foreign languages.
