Home Sales, Inventories Up In April

The number of single-family homes on the market in Massachusetts at the end of April increased 6 percent to 30,101 compared to the same time a year ago, according to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.

That represents an 8.6-month supply of homes on the market despite a monthly sales increase of 43.8 percent over April 2009.

Sales were also up 21.8 percent over March and the median selling price for a single-family home in April was $295,000, a 7.3 percent year-over-year increase. The MAR said the sales increase was driven by buyers trying to take advantage of federal tax credits that expired at the end of the month.

Inventory is down from a year ago, when the state registered an 11.6-month supply and from March when a 9.5-month supply was on the market.
