College of the Holy Cross and Worcester Polytechnic Institute have landed in the top 120 schools nationally in an annual Wall Street Journal ranking released Friday.

Among other Worcester colleges, Clark University ranked 208th and MCPHS University, which is based in Boston but has a campus in Worcester, was 248th. Assumption University was 355th.

The Journal's rankings mainly consider salaries earned by graduates, spending schools put into instruction and student services, as well as student engagement and diversity.

Clark has improved on the list in the past few years, while Holy Cross and WPI have slid.

Clark's ranking of 208 this year compares to 278 two years ago. Holy Cross, 117th this year, was 84th in 2017. WPI, which was 120th this year, was 83rd in 2017.

In Central Massachusetts, three public schools were among those ranked. Fitchburg, Framingham and Worcester state universities all ranked in a range beyond the top 600.

Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, neighbors in Cambridge, finished first and second nationally. They were followed by Yale University in New Haven, Stanford University in California and Brown University in Providence.
