U.S. News & World Report released its annual college rankings Monday, with College of the Holy Cross rising this year to 27th nationally among liberal arts schools.

Holy Cross rose to 27th from 35th, and ranked 80th nationally for best value among liberal arts schools.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, which is ranked in a broader category that includes the country's best public and private colleges, was ranked 64th this year. It was 59th last year. WPI was 56th for best undergraduate teaching programs and 70th among colleges for best value.

Clark University landed 91st on the same national universities list, falling from 66th last year. It ranked 42nd for best value.

The rankings, which are closely watched in the higher education world, consider a range of factors including standardized test scores of admitted students, student-faculty ratios, graduation rates, tuition and financial aid, and post-graduation employment.

Other Central Massachusetts colleges landed on U.S. News & World Report's rankings of regional colleges in the North. Among those: Assumption College was 32nd, Worcester State University was 100th, Framingham State University was 104th, Fitchburg State University was 108th, and Anna Maria College was in a range between 129th and 170th.
