The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester will play football this fall at the Polar Park baseball stadium in the Canal District, according to an announcement from the Worcester Red Sox previewing a press conference on Monday.
The announcement didn't indicate how many games Holy Cross at Polar Park, although WooSox spokesman Bill Wanless said it will be less than the entire season. The press conference between the team and the college is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday.
Holy Cross typically plays its home games on the college campus at Fitton Field, which has a capacity of 23,000, according to the Holy Cross website. Polar Park, the $160-million ballpark that debuted with the WooSox first game on Tuesday, has a capacity of 9,508.
College football teams playing at baseball stadiums is a fairly common practice, as a way to entice fans to a new venue. Boston College, for example, has occasionally played games at Fenway Park.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Holy Cross had to reschedule its fall football season to this spring, where it played four games, including one at Fitton Field. In its last full season, the football team played five home games, with a total attendance of 27,614.
The 2021 Holy Cross fall football schedule has yet to be announced.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the Holy Cross-Worcester Red Sox announcement is scheduled for Friday. The press conference is Monday.
Is this because of attendance issues?
