Marlborough medical technology company Hologic has received Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its Aptima SARS-CoV-2 assay to detect COVID-19, the company announced on Friday.
The test runs on the company’s Panther system, which operates in laboratories around the country. Each Panther system can provide initial test results within about three hours, and can process more than 1,000 tests within 24 hours, the company said.
Hologic is already distributing its new coronavirus test and plans to produce an average of one million tests per week.
More than 1,800 Panther systems are installed in laboratories across 60 countries, according to Hologic.
