Hologic pays $64M for German biopsy firm

Hologic has paid $64 million to buy a German biopsy health technology firm, the Marlborough medical device maker said Monday, giving it the second acquisition of roughly that size in the past five months.

Hologic’s purchase of SOMATEX Medical Technologies GmbH, which is based in the German capital of Berlin, supports Hologic’s strategy of providing a comprehensive array of breast health care products, the company said. It will help the company expand its presence in Europe and is expected to generate for Hologic an estimated $13 million in revenue in 2020, Hologic said.

SOMATEX specializes in technology making biopsies, which are examinations of tissue for cancer or other diseases, more precise. That specialty fits into Hologic’s focus on medical products for women’s health. Hologic had already distributed SOMATEX’s Tumark tissue marker product.

SOMATEX will remain in Berlin after the sale.

In August, Hologic announced a roughly $80-million acquisition of Texas-based Acessa Health, a firm making minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids, or noncancerous growths on the uterus. Clinical studies have shown the system is a safe and minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy, according to Hologic.
