Marlborough-based Hologic Inc. announced Wednesday it has developed a new coronavirus test it plans to distribute hospital, public health and reference laboratories, which the medical device firm expects to dramatically increase testing capabilities for the virus.
It will specifically distribute the tests for research use only, to facilities certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments to perform high complexity tests.
The new Aptima molecular assay will detect the SARS-CoV-2 virus and will run on the company's Panther system.
The company plans to provide customers with about 3 million research tests, and by late May, to begin producing at least 1 million Aptima SARS-CoV-2 assays per week.
The Panther molecular diagnostics system is a fully automated, sample-to-result platform to be used in low, medium, or high-throughput laboratories.
