Hologic launches first mobile breast ultrasound system

Hologic, a Marlborough medical device maker, has created its first ultrasound system for detecting breast lesions that’s based on a movable cart.

The new system, announced Wednesday, uses the company’s existing imaging technology and other technological advances to provide image frame rates of up to 20,000 images per second. The system, called the SuperSonic MACH 40, was designed to help healthcare professionals reduce unnecessary biopsies by eliminating re-scans, reducing lesion correlation time, and improving overall diagnostic accuracy, Hologic said.

The new product includes new diagnostic information to help healthcare providers with patient management, including diagnostic workup of breast lesions.

The SuperSonic MACH 40 system is part of a growing portfolio resulting from Hologic’s acquisition last year of the French ultrasound imaging company SuperSonic Imagine.
