Hologic, a Marlborough medical products company, has launched a new product helping a necessary step for most gynecologic procedures.
The product, called Definity, is a cervical dilator using a balloon-like technology to help medical providers performing gynecologic procedures. Hologic announced the launch of the new product Nov. 6.
Lucas Churchill, the vice president of research and development for Hologic's GYN Surgical Solutions division, said cervical dilation technology has largely been unchanged since the original dilator was invented in 1879.
Definity works without a tenaculum, a forceps-like medical instrument often used for such procedures, which Hologic said lessens patient discomfort and reduces the risk for perforation during dilation. The product was created in a partnership with the San Francisco medical firm CrossBay Medical Inc.
