In a move Marlborough medical device manufacturer Hologic says will open the treatment up to millions of women, insurance provider Cigna has updated its policy to cover the Acessa Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation procedure as medically necessary.
The minimally invasive option for treatment of uterine fibroid, an alternative to a hysterectomy, is now covered for more than 75 million commercially insured people. This is an 18-million person expansion in the last eight months, according to a press release from Hologic.
An estimated 75% of women in the U.S. are affected by fibroids, according to Hologic, and this new decision by Cigna opens up treatment options for those covered by the global health insurance company.
.
“For too long, limited insurance coverage of less invasive fibroid treatment options has caused women to settle for interventions that may not align with their treatment goals,” Essex Mitchell, division president of GYN surgical solutions for Hologic, said in the release.
