The Higgins Armory Museum was officially placed on the market Monday, more than two months after the historic knightly armor museum in Worcester closed its doors.
CBRE/New England will be responsible for marketing the 42,000-square-foot-building at 100 Barber Ave. and its 4.75-acre parking lot, the museum said. CBRE representatives will consider the following in selecting a buyer: most immediate transaction, financial return, reuse of the historic building, honoring its historic features and enhancement to the surrounding community.
There’ss no listing price for the property, museum spokesman Michael Masseur said, with prospective buyers instead being invited to submit their own bids.
The assessed value of the Higgins is $13.9 million, though Thomas Kelleher of Kelleher & Sadowsky in Worcester said last year that it’s unlikely to sell for anywhere near that. Kelleher said the price could end up between $15 and $20 per square foot if a developer sees an opportunity to redevelop the building for a profit.
The Higgins opened in 1931 and closed Dec. 31. The first exhibit featuring items from the Higgins collection will open March 29 at the Worcester Art Museum.
