Heywood Hospital in Gardner has launched a new bariatric medicine program with the opening of The Heywood Center for Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery.
The center offers services from specialists in the areas of behavioral health, fitness and nutrition trained in bariatric medicine, according to a statement released in January. Dr. Nari Sabeti leads the program as Heywood’s chief of bariatric surgery. Sabeti was formerly part of a group of bariatric surgeons for more than five years, performing more than 1,000 bariatric surgeries, Heywood said.
Bariatric surgery has become an increasingly common tool for treating obesity-related illness, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. There were roughly 196,000 bariatric surgeries performed in 2015, with gastric sleeve procedures accounting for the majority, or 53.8 percent, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
