A historic venue in Acton that was once the site of a lecture by Henry David Thoreau has been sold for $1.07 million to a Belmont-based church.

Exchange Hall, located at 2 School St., was sold in a deal finalized on Tuesday to Anointed Worship Center of Belmont, according to South Middlesex Registry of Deeds records.

The four-story wooden building was constructed in 1860 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to its website, having hosted lectures by Thoreau and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher. It is an example of Italianate architecture, a mid-19th century style of architecture known for its use of decorative brackets and cornices.

The venue contains offices on its bottom three floors and a ballroom on its upper floor, utilized for dances, weddings, and other events. Magenta Dance Place, a dance school, is located at the building, according to the company’s website.

The building was sold by Exchange Hall LLC, an Acton-based entity operated by Glenn Berger, the president of Acton Woodworks. The venue did not immediately respond to an email from WBJ requesting more details about the sale.

The building underwent a restoration in 2009, according to its website.

The property was given a tax assessment value of $875,600 in 2024, according to Town of Acton property records.
