The U.S. Department of Labor has announced two grants totaling $5.7 million to help Massachusetts workers who have been laid off.
The majority of the money, $4.3 million, will go to help about 720 workers put out of work by the closure of AJ Wright. Framingham-based discount retailer TJX Cos. Inc. began eliminating its AJ Wright brand last year. The funds will be administered by the Bristol Workforce Investment Board and the Metro South/West Employment and Training Administration. They will help workers get employment and training services including adult basic education, English language lessons, vocational training and job placement support.
The other $1.4 million will provide continuing training and re-employment services to about 600 workers laid off by nine companies in the metro south/west area of the state. The companies include ACT Electronics Inc. of Hudson, Bose Corp. of Framingham, EMC Corp. of Hopkinton, Sunovian Inc. of Marlborough and Staples Inc. of Framingham.
