Heidi M. Paluk

Age: 36
Title: Vice President, Marketing and Communications
Company: United Way of Central Massachusetts
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Worcester

Career highlights:
I am the vice president of marketing and communications for the United Way of Central Massachusetts. Previously, I was director of public affairs at Assumption College for many years. My career in communications came about unexpectedly.
I had always imagined myself working in politics, which was my major in college. However, after working in state government for a few years, I realized the art of communicating ideas with words, graphics, or speech was really my true passion. I was hired by Assumption College, my alma mater, where I was fortunate to have the support to develop and hone my communication skills.

Community involvement:
Due to the public nature of my career, I have the fortunate position of being involved on many civic and community oriented committees in Worcester. Personally, I choose to be a member of the Society of Professional Communicators and Women’s Initiative of United Way of Central Massachusetts. I am also on the Board of Directors at First Friends Early Education and Care, serving as clerk. I hope my life will be defined not by what I did, but what I was able to give — personally and professionally. To me, that is true success.

Biggest success:
There has not been one particular aspect of my career that I would say stands out among the rest. I am blessed to have accomplished many unique things in my short career: managing a political campaign, staging eight commencements, organizing a college presidential inauguration, and garnering national publicity for Assumption.

Dream job:
Operating a gondola in Venice, Italy or owning a trattoria in Piazza di Trevi. Actually, any job in Italy would be a dream!

Businessperson she most admires and why:
Walt Disney! How can you not admire someone who had a vision to bring happiness and joy to visitors of all ages. More importantly, he was actually able to execute on that vision and be hugely successful at it. Genius!
