To the Editor,
I am writing to express sincere concern regarding two recent above-the-fold headline articles pertaining to North Central Massachusetts. My specific concerns are that both article headlines (âNorth County: We Don't Need No Education,â WBJ, June 23, 2008, and âCEO: There's No Room To Grow in Plastic City,â WBJ, April 28, 2008) reflect negatively on the North Central Massachusetts region. Additionally the negative editorialized headlines do not properly reflect the substance of the respective articles which were balanced and well written by Livia Gershon.
We have formed a regional economic development council to unite, define and market this region and we have spent considerable time and money to present a positive investment environment including a substantial inventory of affordable land and buildings and a highly skilled workforce.
We appreciate WBJ's attention to all business news in North Central as well as to our own North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council efforts. While we realize that not all news from this region is rosy, it seems unnecessary to default to the negative in headline writing.
I would prefer going back to the years that WBJ had virtually no news north of West Boylston. The Pink Floyd quote was a cheap shot and probably not understood by the majority of readers. Instead, it makes North Central Massachusetts residents appear to be ignorant, our workforce inferior, and is insulting to two of the finest state higher education institutions in Massachusetts.
Please refrain from editorialized headlines. Stick to the news. We Don't Need No Thought Control.
Nancy Jackson, vice president of development for the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp.
