Harvard Pilgrim Targets Cost Transparency
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, which opened an office in downtown Worcester 16 months ago, has launched an online tool to help patients research the cost of various procedures and services.
The cost calculator, called Now iKnow, will allow patients to compare pricing at various providers and keep track of their deductibles and out-of-pocket costs. The tool will also include quality ratings.
Transparency in health care pricing has been a major sticking point in Massachusetts and across the country. In 2010, Martha Coakley, the state's attorney general, pinpointed price disparity and lack of transparency as major drivers of rising costs.
"Now iKnow will allow Harvard Pilgrim to fill a large gap in the health care quality and cost information available to consumers," Rick Weisblatt, a senior vice president at the insurer, said in a statement.
