Harvard Bioscience launches inhalation system for researchers

A Harvard Bioscience subsidiary has launched a new inhalation and exposure system for drug research.

The new product by Data Sciences International, an arm of Holliston scientific instrument maker Harvard Bioscience, is meant to provide more accurate respiration monitoring of animals such as mice or guinea pigs during testing. Researchers will be better able to monitor respiration during testing exposure, which will improve the welfare of animals used for testing, DSI said.

The technological advancement in the DSI Buxco Inhalation Exposure System is critical because of rising popularity of delivering drugs respiratorily, according to the company, which announced the new product Wednesday.

The market for respiratory drugs is about $48 billion, DSI said. When taken through inhalation, drug doses can be lower while still effective, reducing the risk of side effects, the company said.
