Harrington Renovation On At Webster Campus

Southbridge-based Harrington HealthCare System said it can begin reconstruction of the emergency department on its Webster campus, now that $1.5 million in state funding has been secured in the fiscal 2014 budget.

“With the approval of the state budget and the $1.5 million designated for our project, we now have the critical mass needed to put a shovel in the ground and begin rebuilding our emergency department in Webster,” Harrington President and CEO Edward H. Moore said in a statement. “We hope to begin construction this fall and complete the project in the fall of 2014.”

Moore credited State Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, with leading the effort to secure the $1.5 million provision in the $33.6-billion state budget signed by Gov. Deval Patrick July 12.

The reconstruction will be the first major renovation for the Webster emergency department since it was built in 1955, according to Harrington.

The project will cost an estimated $8.8 million. An anonymous donor matched the $1.3 million Harrington raised on its own, and has also pledged to double the state’s contribution, bringing the total funding available for the project to $5.8 million.
Harrington will continue fundraising to meet the total project cost, Moore said.
