Harrington nears opening of new ER in Webster

Harrington HealthCare System (HHS) has begun a renovation and expansion of its emergency department at its Webster campus that it expects will be finished in December.

The $8.8 million renovation will increase the number of beds in the department from five to nine and up the square footage from 3,000 to 13,000. The current emergency department serves residents of Webster, Dudley, Oxford, Douglas and surrounding communities, but has not had a major renovation since it was built in 1955, according to HHS.

The renovation will allow the emergency department to accommodate increased patient traffic Harringtonexpects in the near future. The emergency department currently handles 12,000 cases a year, a number that is expected to grow to 15,000 within the next three years, according to HHS.

The emergency department will be named after Arthur Remillard Jr., who pledged a $4 million matching gift for the project on behalf of the Remillard Family Foundation.
