Harrington lung cancer screening program reviews thousands

A Harrington HealthCare System lung cancer screening program has grown from reviewing hundreds of patients in its first year to nearly 1,300 in the most recent year.

The screening program targets at-risk patients including current smokers or those who quit fewer than 15 years ago, and those between the ages of 55 and 77. Low-dose, 10-minute CT scans review patients at Harrington's Southbridge or Webster campuses.

The program is especially critical in Harrington's hometown of Southbridge, which the health system said has a 25% rate of use of tobacco products, far higher than a typical community in Massachusetts.

The program began in 2015, screening 369 patients. In the most recent fiscal year ending Sept. 30, that grew to 1,280, a jump of 20% in just one year.

Harrington’s imaging team is lead by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center radiologists who meet regularly with oncologists, thoracic surgeons and pulmonologists to review screenings and plan appropriate care.
