Harrington Hospital in Southbridge is allowing emergency department patients to check in online from home and wait until it's their turn to be seen, in an effort to aid social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.
Throughout the pandemic, hospitals have been urging patients who need emergency care not to delay it out of fear they may catch the virus, with special screening and care areas set aside for coronavirus patients. Harrington is now taking a step to make sure patients still get emergency care but minimize the time they spend in the hospital filling out paperwork and waiting their turn to be seen.
The new system is meant for patients whose conditions aren't life-threatening. Patients can make a reservation by smartphone, tablet or through the hospital's website. Patients can opt to receive a text message with alerts and updates as their scheduled time approaches.
Harrington's visitor policy limitations remain in place, with only one person accompanying a patient allowed, including in the emergency department. All visitors will be screened for symptoms and must wear a mask at all times.
