Harrington expanding into Connecticut with behavioral facility

File photo Harrington President and CEO Edward Moore said Thursday that the company is moving forward with an expansion in Connecticut.

Southbridge-based Harrington HealthCare is moving forward with an expansion in Northeastern Connecticut, with plans to open a behavioral health center in Putnam in the fall, CEO Edward Moore said in an interview Thursday morning.

It is Harrington’s first out-of-state location. Moore said the system is finalizing a lease on just under 6,000 square feet of space on Kennedy Drive, which is just off of I-395 and about 12 minutes to Harrington’s Webster campus.

The site will house a child and adolescent outpatient program and a substance abuse recovery services program, he said. Recruiting of clinicians for the Putnam site is underway, and the office will likely be open by November or December, according to Moore. There will be a psychiatrist, nurse practitioner and counselors on staff.

In Webster, Harrington offers additional inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services, making it a natural extension of the planned Putnam site, Moore noted.

“As it is everywhere, the need is significant,” Moore said, of the demand for behavioral health services in the Putnam area.

Harrington first announced plans to enter the Connecticut market primarily served by Putnam-based Day Kimball Healthcare last fall. Day Kimball and Harrington overlap somewhat, each servicing towns on the border of Connecticut and Massachusetts, but until now, neither system has had a brick-and-mortar site in each other’s territory.

The Putnam location is part of a larger expansion of Harrington’s behavioral health services over the last two years. Harrington opened its 16-bed inpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment facility in Webster in January.

“Since we already have the infrastructure in place as a system, we thought expanding [in Putnam] would be very feasible,” Moore said.

Behavioral health services is a significant part of Harrington’s services, making up about 15 percent of the system’s revenue, according to Moore.

Moore said there could be additional opportunities to expand in Connecticut, beyond behavioral health services, but those haven’t been determined.
