The president CEO of Connecticut health care system Day Kimball Health Care has resigned, according to a statement from the board of directors.
Robert Smanik had been at the Day Kimball helm for 10 years, guiding the Putnam-based system through financial turbulence in recent years. Day Kimball and other Connecticut providers have fought the state’s cuts to Medicaid funding, which have prompted staff reductions and service cuts at Day Kimball and elsewhere.
In a recent interview with Worcester Business Journal about new competition from Harrington HealthCare System, which is looking to grow in Day Kimball’s Northeastern Connecticut territory, Smanik said Day Kimball is in the midst of a financial turnaround.
But according to the Day Kimball Board of Directors, a fresh take is needed.
“Day Kimball is thankfully now in a better place and it’s time to move on to the next phase of our evolution. Both Bob and our Board agreed that the organization would benefit from a fresh perspective in that effort,” said Joseph Adiletta, the former chairman of the Day Kimball Board who now serves as interim president and CEO, in last week’s statement.
The Board is conducting a search for Smanik’s replacement.
