Harrington adds 3D mammograms

Harrington HealthCare System has added 3D mammogram service at locations in Charlton, Southbridge and Webster.

Harrington first said in 2017 it would have 3D mammography at its Southbridge campus, and on Monday said it is  adding the service in Charlton and Webster.

Four 3D units have been installed to replace more conventional 2D machines.

A 3D screen uses an advanced screening technology called tomosynthesis better at detecting breast cancer and avoiding the need for additional testing. In 2D scans, overlapping dense breast tissue can lead to inaccurate readings and require additional scans.

Harrington’s new machinery is designed to be more comfortable to patients, the health care system said. Mammogram results are read and interpreted by radiologists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston who work with Harrington for breast imaging.
