Hanover Theatre Wins National Preservation Award

The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Worcester will be presented with a Preservation Honor Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation next week in Austin, Texas.

The 106-year-old theatre was abandoned for a decade and fell into serious disrepair before undergoing a $31 million renovation. It reopened in 2008.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation called the theatre “an architectural and community treasure,” and a “textbook case on how to bring a building – and a neighborhood – back to life.”

Troy Siebels, the Hanover’s executive director, will be presented with the award. Additional recipients include Deborah Packard of Preservation Worcester; Edward P. Madaus and Paul J. Demoga, founders of the project; Michael Pagano of Lamoureux-Pagano Associates Architects; Frederick Eppinger, CEO of the Hanover Insurance Group; Mary C. Defeudis, one of the project’s primary benefactors; Stephen Killian of Barr & Barr Inc., the project’s general contractor; Rodney White of Whipple Construction and David Forsberg of the Worcester Business Development Corp., the project’s developer.
