The Hanover Insurance Group Foundation will donate $500,000 to the EcoTarium of Worcester to match contributions from other corporate donors as part of the science and nature center's fundraising efforts.
The gift from the Worcester-based property and casualty insurer will help EcoTarium develop new educational outreach programs. It's the second gift from Hanover's foundation as part of EcoTarium's Third Century Plan. The Hanover committed $1 million in 2009 and through this new pledge, the company will encourage additional corporate support of the Third Century Plan, matching dollar for dollar all contributions up to $500,000, according to a statement from EcoTarium.
"As we continue to upgrade the EcoTarium – making it a center for innovation – The Hanover's most recent gift is incredibly meaningful because it encourages other corporations to make contributions that support science and education," said Joseph P. Cox, EcoTarium's president. "At the same time, we are thrilled with the momentum of the Third Century Plan. Each new phase represents a dramatic step forward, helping us to build a world-class museum that inspires a passion for science and nature."
Frederick H. Eppinger, The Hanover's CEO, said "Science, technology, engineering and math play such important roles in our economy, (and) The EcoTarium is an especially valuable resource to our city and to our region."
