Hanover Insurance to refund personal auto customers 15% of premiums

The Hanover Insurance Group in Worcester announced it would return 15% of personal auto insurance premiums back to eligible customers, as it is among the auto insurers around the nation benefitting from a significant drop in travel due to stay-at-home orders in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Hanover CARES Refund will apply to April and May premiums for personal auto insurance policyholders, according to the insurance company, with plans for April policy refunds to be distributed in May, and May refunds to be distributed in June.

“We recognize our customers are feeling significant stress, including financial pressure, as a result of this pandemic,” said John Roche, president and CEO at The Hanover, in a press release.

Beyond refunds, The Hanover is providing bill payment flexibility for customers facing financial hardships, extending personal auto coverage at no additional cost for those who deliver essential goods and extending reimbursements for rental cars in certain situations, among other emergency provisions.

The company will donate $500,000 to area nonprofits working to combat the coronavirus pandemic and its community impact, the company said. This includes $350,000 to United Way, the Boys & Girls Club and chamber of commerce organizations in both Massachusetts and Michigan, providing medical supplies and PPE to area hospitals, and implementing an employee matching gift program for donations made to coronavirus relief efforts.
