Every one of the top 23 highest-paid state employees in Massachusetts works for the state’s UMass network. And of the top 10, half work at UMass Medical School in Worcester, according to new data from the WBJ Research Department.
Coming in at the top spot in the state is the UMass Medical School chancellor and senior vice president of health services, Michael Collins. Collins’ 2020 salary was set at $765,219, according to the data, which is sourced from the state’s comptroller’s office. Collins’ total earnings come in at just over $1.1 million.
The second highest earner is also an employee at UMass Medical School, Terence Flotte, who serves as dean, provost and executive deputy chancellor. His salary is $800,936, with total earnings of just over $1.07 million.
A woman does not appear on the list until the 12th spot: Lisa Colombo, the executive vice chancellor for the Commonwealth Medicine division at UMass Medical School, who had $433,834 in salary and $542,209 in total earnings in 2020.
For every dollar spent on these truly excellent physicians, I'm sure the state gets back at least 2X(if not much more) the amount in research, job creation, medical expertise and marketing revenue for their collective leadership and efforts.
