The Worcester Historical Commission unanimously approved on Thursday night a demolition project on 517 Main St., a narrow 1870-era building adjacent to the building housing the Great Wall Restaurant.
The building is being redeveloped by MG2 Group, the same developers behind The Grid District redevelopment off Worcester Common and near the Worcester Public Library.
Ian Fox, representing MG2 Group at the meeting, told commissioners the Boston-based developer plans to replace the building’s windows, as well as reopen windows that have been boarded up. It will repoint and clean the building’s brick facade, and add a second egress to the building’s rear.
MG2 Group also plans to replace the building’s slate roof with another slate roof, Fox said.
Although an interior gutting is part of the developer’s larger plan for the building, Fox did not dive into details about that aspect of the project.
With little discussion, the commissioners unanimously approved the proposal, remarking they were thrilled the building would be restored with a historically appropriate visage.
