The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has given out $10 million in scholarships to Worcester County students in the 40 years since its inception.
According to the foundation, $636,550 over 417 scholarships was awarded to students in June 2017. That number has brought the foundation’s 40-year total to $10.6 million.
Scholarships range from $300 to $5,000, with the average at $1,500. The foundation has 132 scholarship funds and has awarded 7,345 scholarships in 40 years.
Beckley Schowalter, the foundation’s scholarship program manager, called college education a critical step to a career.
“A degree benefits both the student and society,” Schowalter said. “But, getting to college, and completing it, is hard work! So we’re honored to award scholarships that affirm and encourage students, giving them a boost and re-energizing their efforts.”
