Grant to help ECI develop wound care product

ECI Biotech Inc. of Worcester received $208,311 in Small Business Innovative Research grant money for the development of a wound infection diagnosis system.

The system is based on the company's ExpressDetect technology, and detects pathogens that infect chronic wounds.

According to ECI, the system can detect pathogens in about 15 minutes, and is planned for the $1.2 billion advanced wound care market.

The product can be used as a rapid diagnostic tool, as well as in wound dressings for professional and consumer use.

ECI expects to launch the product in 2009.

ECI has also received SBIR grants for a product that may prevent gingivitis.
