Governor seeking $200M road-work funding

Gov. Charlie Baker filed a bill Thursday seeking $200 million in state funding for road and bridge improvements, which communities rely heavily on to pay for infrastructure work.
Worcester, for example, has gotten between $4 million and $6 million in so-called Chapter 90 funding in recent years, and other area communities, including Shrewsbury, Marlborough and Framingham, have received more than $1 million annually.
Through the Chapter 90 program, the state Department of Transportation reimburses cities and towns for costs incurred for eligible transportation projects. Funding is awarded by municipality and is predetermined by a formula that includes population, total miles of roadway and employment.
This is the third straight year in which the Baker Administration has requested $200 million in infrastructure funds.
In addition to the Chapter 90 funding, the legislation includes $30 million for a mobility assistance program through which the state can purchase accessible vehicles on behalf of municipal transit agencies, local councils on aging and private nonprofits to provide transportation services to those with disabilities. The bill provides $70 million for upgrades to the Registry of Motor Vehicles’ core information-technology system.
