Gov. Baker reintroduces mask advisory, activates National Guard as COVID cases rise

Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration on Tuesday announced a new plan to address the past weeks’ rise in COVID-19 cases, which will include activation of the National Guard and a new mask advisory, according to a press release from the Executive Offices of Health and Human Services.

As part of the plan, the governor has activated up to 500 members of the Massachusetts National Guard, who will address non-clinical needs of hospitals and transport systems. Guard members are beginning training this week to support 55 hospitals and 12 ambulance service providers across the state.

This support will include transportation between facilities, patient observation, and help maintaining safe workplace environments. The Guard will be deployed starting Dec. 27, per the release.

Secondly, all hospitals in the state are being asked to postpone or cancel nonessential elective surgeries effective Dec. 27 to preserve healthcare personnel.

Finally, the Department of Public Health has released an updated mask advisory, recommending all individuals wear a face mask in indoor, public spaces. Masks are required on public transportation and in healthcare facilities.
