Good Test Results For AMSC Grid Product

Devens-based American Superconductor Corp. announced that a project it's conducting with Nexans and Siemens shows positive results for the use of its superconductor products in high-voltage transmission grids.

The companies tested a resistive fault current limiter (FCL) that uses high-temperature superconductor wire at the high power levels used in the transmission grid.

American Superconductor said the FCL can act as a surge protector for the power grid, stopping power in case of emergency without impeding normal operation.

The development and testing of the FCL received support from the U.S. Department of Energy and is intended to accelerate the modernization of the U.S. electricity grid.
