Good Chemistry gets Worcester's first recreational marijuana license

Worcester’s only medical marijuana dispensary Good Chemistry has received its final local approval for recreational sales and is eyeing opening its doors for that market in March.

The Colorado-based company received its retail marijuana license from the city’s License Commission Thursday just over a week after the company was awarded a provisional license for adult-use sales from the state Cannabis Control Commission.

Final approvals on the state level could still be months away, but the local vote marked the first license for adult-use sales in Worcester.

The 9 Harrison St. location has been open for medical marijuana sales since August, so the location already satisfies the city’s security and odor-control requirements.

The location is equipped with 40 cameras and a security guard is on site during open hours. Paid police details will most likely be on site as the location transitions to both medical and adult-use sales.

Attorney Mark Donahue of law Worcester firm Fletcher Tilton PC represented the company at Thursday’s hearing, where he said the largest issue when the company opens will be traffic and impact on the local neighborhood.

Donahue cited the issues reported from Leicester residents about traffic backups due to Cultivate being one of two recreational shops to open on the East Coast.

“There’s a certain draw that comes with it,” he said.

The Cannabis Control Commission has issued final licenses to three other retail locations in Salem, Easthampton and Wareham, but those businesses have yet to receive the final go-ahead from state regulators.

“We don’t expect that we would be the third operator in Massachusetts, but we can’t say for sure what the CCC is going to do,” Donahue said.

The company is, however, expecting to sell about $4 million worth of products. Per a host community agreement with the city, the company will give Worcester the greater of either 3 percent of its gross sales or $120,000.
