Good Chemistry first in Worcester to get provisional retail cannabis license

With the rollout of the Massachusetts recreational marijuana industry proceeding without problem Tuesday, the state Cannabis Control Commission said at a Tuesday meeting more stores should begin opening routinely.
One of those that could be opening soon is Good Chemistry, a medical marijuana dispensary open since August on Harrison Street in Worcester. The store received provisional approval for a retail license from the CCC Tuesday, the same day that Leicester-based Cultivate became one of two adult-use pot retailers to open east of the Mississippi River.
Good Chemistry is the first Worcester retailer to land a provisional license from the CCC. The company and city agreed to terms on a host community agreement in July, along with retailer Prime Wellness.
The company, also approved to grow and produce recreational products at a Bellingham facility, will now have to pass other rounds of inspections and certifications. The store will still need a final retail license and must have its products tested by an independent laboratory before it can begin sales.
That process can be lengthy. Cultivate got its provisional retail license from the CCC in July and its final license in October.
Good Chemistry began operations on the West Coast in 2000 when CEO Matthew Huron decided to help his father and partner help relieve symptoms of HIV.
“We began cultivating cannabis nearly 20 years ago to bring relief to those suffering from HIV-AIDS and other critical illnesses,” Hurson said in a statement. “Today’s decision allows us to continue to serve that mission and to increase access to high quality cannabis for other members of the Worcester community.”
According to the CCC, Worcester County is tied with Berkshire County for the most retail cannabis applications at 10.
Also receiving provisional retail licenses Tuesday were Atlantic Medical Partners in Fitchburg, and Sanctuary Medicinals in Gardner.
Receiving final retail licenses Tuesday were Alternative Therapies Group in Salem and I.N.S.A. in Easthampton. Another retailer, Pharmacannis Massachusetts in Wareham, has already been given a final license.
