State health officials have given Worcester medical marijuana dispensary Good Chemistry the approval to sell its own products about two months after the company was forced to cease sales due to an organic compound used to treat the plants.
In an Oct. 5 letter to Good Chemistry, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said the company can resume the cultivation, sale and distribution of any marijuana from three batches grown at its Bellingham cultivation facility.
However, marijuana in four other batches must remain quarantined at the same facility, per DPH orders, until the DPH completes its review of the compound the company was using.
Colorado-based Good Chemistry opened on Aug. 2, but was ordered on Aug. 30 to cease and desist the sale of its own products, forcing the company to close the Harrison Street medical cannabis store for several days before it was allowed to reopen and sell third-party products.
According to Good Chemistry, the compounds used were used many times before in Colorado, Nevada, Washington and Oregon. Massachusetts health officials, however, were unfamiliar with them.
The company has agreed to not use the two organic compounds identified until state health officials can approve them for use in cannabis cultivation.
A host community agreement and special permit for recreational cannabis from Worcester have already been secured and the company has submitted its application to the Cannabis Control Commission, but the company has said the Worcester location won’t sell adult-use products until at least the end of the year.
