With downsizing and pay freezes a common experience, many workers may feel less engaged with their employers than they have in the past. But a new survey by WorldatWork, Loyola University Chicago and Hay Group suggests that paying more isn't the only-or even the best-way to keep workers on board with an organization's mission.
Forty-eight percent of the survey's 736 respondents said benefits and perks have a high or very high impact on employee engagement. In contrast, 42 percent and 41 percent respectively said that raises or base salary were that important.
Intangible benefits like quality of work, career development and work-life balance are all keys to keeping workers engaged, according to WorldatWork.
The surveying organizations said that one of best ways to make rewards and benefits effective is to involve workers in the design of the plans. Yet the survey found that just 11 percent of respondents often or always did so.
