German manufacturer Physik Instrumente has opened a new U.S. headquarters in Shrewsbury, part of an attempt to improve its operations in the Americas and adapt to tariffs.
The opening of the new facility comes after construction began in the spring of 2024, according to a Tuesday press release from PI.
The approximately 140,000-square-foot facility at 440 Hartford Turnpike is triple the combined space of PI’s locations in Auburn, Hopkinton, and Nashua, New Hampshire, allowing the firm to improve supply stability and enhance support of customers in North America and South America.
"Our new factory reflects both PI's growth and our long-term commitment to supporting customers in North & South America," Matt Reck, managing director, operations at PI, said in the press release. "It gives us the space and flexibility to expand production and R&D while mitigating trade pressures and ensuring the continued delivery of the precision and reliability solutions PI is known for worldwide."
Those three locations will be consolidated into the Shrewsbury space, bringing 75 full-time jobs. The new site is expected to add 100 more jobs, according to a company official in 2023.
The site is owned by GFI Partners of Boston, according to real estate data platform CoStar. Dallas-based CBRE handled the lease for the site.
The company said the new site will generate high-quality engineering and technology jobs while stimulating local economic growth. It added increasing its ability to manufacture products in the United States will help reduce the impact of import tariffs while providing stable pricing and delivery of products.
PI had formerly considered moving its headquarters to Marlborough, purchasing 130 Lizotte Drive for $4.85 million in October 2022. The firm later decided to move to Shrewsbury instead, with Southborough-based Ferris Development Group buying 130 Lizotte Drive for $4.48 million in March 2024, with plans to convert the office building at the site into apartments.
