George’s Coney Island unable to open Monday because of staffing

George’s Coney Island in Worcester is closed Monday because of a reported staffing shortage, the iconic restaurant said in a Sunday night Facebook post.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to solve this, so it doesn’t happen again,” the post said.

At the same time, the restaurant asked that anyone looking for a job as grill operator or dish washer should reach out to apply.

Despite Massachusetts unemployment rising in August for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic’s initial month, to 5%, and sitting at 6% in Greater Worcester, employers have struggled to find workers for open positions. The hospitality industry, which was among those hit the hardest during the pandemic, is having a harder time filling positions than most.
