Sanofi, the new owner of Cambridge research company Genzyme, which has major manufacturing operations in Framingham, today announced plans to lay off some of its employees. But, as part of the reorganization, positions will be added in other areas, keeping the company's employment level in the Bay State about stable, according to Sanofi.
After Sanofi purchased Genzyme last year, the two companies reviewed operations and found "synergies" and "redundant" positions, a statement from the company read. The job cuts will be in the company's research and development divisions.
In addition to the cuts, however, the company is adding employees in manufacturing and in other R&D areas, such as multiple sclerosis testing.
Company officials would not provide details on the number of jobs impacted by today's announcement or where those job gains or losses would specifically be.
Genzyme has a major manufacturing center in the Framingham Technology Park.
