Genzyme Genetics Offers Test For Spinal Condition

Genzyme Genetics, the Westborough-based business unit of Genzyme Corp. of Cambridge, is now providing testing to determine if couples are at risk for having a baby with spinal muscular atrophy.

The company is the first national laboratory specializing in the tests, it said. SMA is the most common inherited cause of infant mortality. Prenatal tests and tests for couples who are considering having a baby are both expected to have about a 94 percent detection rate, the company said.

Carriers of SMA, which causes muscle degeneration, have no symptoms of the disease and rarely have a family history of SMA, the company said.
