The area’s largest biomedical company has expanded its Westborough footprint by nearly 50 percent with a new lease at One Research Drive.
The 53,879-square foot expansion represents a 47 percent increase for Sanofi Genzyme at the location, where the company now has a total square footage of 167,901 square feet, according to Transwestern/RBJ, which handled the transaction. The company is the largest biomedical employer in the area with 2,000 employees in Central Massachusetts.
Genzyme moved approximately 500 employees to the Westborough location from Framingham in 2014. The decision to sign the 7-year lease was driven by the affordability of the location and its amenities, Genzyme officials said at the time of the move. The employees initially located at the site worked in Global Industrial Operations, quality, information systems, procurement, regulatory affairs, human resources and information solutions.
The expansion is a win for the One Research Drive location, which is now 96 percent occupied, according to Transwestern/RBJ. It was only 50 percent occupied when Ferris Development acquired the 283,285-square foot, Class A building in 2014 for $21.5 million. Since its purchase, Ferris Development has made significant building renovations and improvements, including a new lobby, stone façade entrance and outdoor patio. The building’s cafeteria and 140-seat auditorium and training area were also upgraded.
