GE Healthcare has bought a fetal-monitoring device company as it looks to expand in the maternal and infant care business, it announced Thursday.
GE bought Monica Healthcare, a British company, for an undisclosed price. GE Healthcare’s life sciences division is based in Marlborough.
Monica Healthcare had more than 100,000 expecting mothers — or midwives or labor and delivery nurses — use its fetal monitors last year, the 12-year-old company said. The product is used in North America, Europe and Asia.
The two companies have worked together already.
Since 2015, GE Healthcare has been Monica Healthcare’s North American distribution partner for one of its products, the Novii Wireless Patch System, a patch that monitors maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate and uterine activity using Bluetooth technology.
GE Healthcare calls itself the global leader in prenatal ultrasound, with more than 230 million expectant mothers using its ultrasound products each year.
